Special Events Intern

Campus Recreation is seeking multiple Special Event Interns.

Special Events/Operations Coordinator 1 (Internship)

Job Description  

Working the operational side of events held or sponsored by WVU Campus Recreation. Events range in size and times, mostly located at the Student Rec Center. Operations will be individual or team setting. Mostly evenings and weekends. This is an entry level position with eligibility for advancement in the upper coordinator levels.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for creating guest satisfaction by providing efficient, effective, and extraordinary service and to ensure that patron expectations are exceeded.
  • Collaborations with Event Supervisor and other staff members to perform and execute assigned special events.
  • Communicates with other staff members about potential issues and safety hazards.  
  • Make decisions and take action that represent the Student Recreation Center in a positive way.  This includes enforcing policy and working through areas of conflict.
  • Employee will work outside job description when needed to assist other staff members throughout the Student Rec Center.  
Qualifications

Coordinator I 

  • Must be an enrolled student of WVU; preferably within a Sports Management, Physical Education, Recreation or related field. 
  • Must have the following valid certifications: 
    • Title IX training 

Coordinator II 

  • Must be an enrolled student of WVU; preferably within a Sports Management, Physical Education, Recreation Management or related field. 
  • Must have worked one full year as a Special Events Student Staff Coordinator 1
  • Must have the following valid certifications:
    • CPR/AED certification 
    • Title IX trainin
    • Funds Handling

Group Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers

Group Fitness Instructors

Applicants must currently hold one or more of the following:

  • G eneral group fitness certification from a nationally-accredited organization (e.g., AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NETA, etc.)
  • Specialty group fitness certification (e.g., Zumba, Spinning, BodyPump, etc.)

Applicants will also be asked to provide a short demonstration (~20 minutes) of their class format and participate in an in-person interview. The SRC will periodically host general and specialty group fitness certification workshops.

Personal Trainers

Applicants must hold:

  • Nationally recognized certification as a certified personal trainer (e.g., ACE, NASM, CSCS, ACSM)
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification (e.g., Red Cross, AHA, etc.)
  • Applicants with additional specialty crede ntialing are encouraged to apply

Applicants will be asked to engage in a two-part interview process consisting of a formal in-person interview combined with a practical assessment of personal training competency. The SRC will periodically host general and specialty personal trainer certification workshops and professional development sessions.

Guest Services

  • Student workers can be employed in guest services, as a cashier or as a facility supervisor. 
  • All student workers with Campus Recreation begin in guest services.
  • Responsible for the management of the front desk, upper fitness and lower fitness 
  • Greet  visitors, swipe IDs, answer  general SRC questions, handle equipment checkout and laundry services, among other miscellaneous tasks
  • Workers in upper and lower fitness are responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of fitness floors, assisting visitors and providing outstanding customer service  

Students who are employed with guest services have the opportunity to move into cashier and facility supervisor positions. Student workers who move into a cashier position are responsible for selling pro shop items, personal training packages and swim lessons, among other products. Cashiers work directly with cash, checks and credit cards.

Students who are facility supervisors hold the highest student position in the Student Recreation Center. These students are trained to handle various responsibilities in the Student Recreation Center including responding to injury, suspicious activity, confrontation, writing up student employees and working directly with other university employees, among other tasks that assists GAs and full-time staff.

Aquatics Department

Individuals who are interested in becoming a lifeguard at the Student Recreation Center must have a valid certification.

SRC Lifeguards' Primary Responsibilities include: 
  • To prevent accidents and eliminate of minimize hazardous situations 
  • To recognize and respond quickly to all emergency situations and administer first aid as needed 
  •  To communicate to other lifeguards and facility management the need for additional  assistance or equipment in an emergency
  • To observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility
  • To educate and inform patrons of the rules and regulations as necessary 
  • To complete all required reports and records on schedule and to submit them to the proper person or office
  • To maintain complete, safe and sanitary facility
  • To attend in-­service training sessions and staff meeting as scheduled
  • To carry out all additional duties assigned by Head Guards, Shift Leaders, or Aquatic Management
Water Skills Assessment 
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidate may swim using the front crawl, breast stroke or a combination of both. 
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. 
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (Face may be in or out of water), Surface dive, feet-­‐first or head first, to a depth of 7-­‐9 feet to retrieve a 10-­‐pound object. Return to surface and swim 20 yards on back to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping face at or near the surface. 
  • Exit water from gutter 
  • Perform compact entry into vortex area and exit 
  • Perform shallow in-­line techniques 
  • Perform a rescue scenario and remove victim from water 
Expectations and Opportunities 
The WVU Student Rec Center aquatics area is open Monday ‐ Friday from 6:00 a.m. ­‐ 11:00 p.m., Saturday from 7:45 a.m. -­ 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:45 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. during regular hours. The SRC aquatics area has reduced hours during university and summer breaks.
