Sleeping Bags

Photo of Sleeping BagOur sleeping bags are made by Wiggy's and are "mummy" style, lightweight, and easy to stuff. Although these bags can be used for any outing, backpacking may be their primary use.

Bags come in three temperature ratings: 45 degree, 25 degree, and 5 degree. The 45-degree is noticeably smaller and lighter and is stored in a smaller bag (it also has two zippers). The 25 degree is noticeably heavier and is stored in a larger bag.

To get the 5-degree bag, place the 25 degree bag inside of the 45-degree bag and use the inner zippers to connect them.

Sleeping bag ratings are assuming the use of a sleeping pad and a tent.

Sleeping Pads

Photo of Sleeping PadSleeping pads help insulate and provide cushion for a variety of outdoor activities. Most commonly you would rent a pad along with a sleeping bag, especially on a backpacking trip. Sleeping pads are approximately 1/2" thick. During cold weather, the sleeping bag temperature rating is only valid when the bag is used in conjunction with a pad.

Backpacks

Internal frame packs (metal stays are located on the inside of pack)

Photo of Internal frame packAn internal frame pack is ideally suited for trips where balance is critical or where narrow spaces will be encountered. Internal frame packs' backbone rests directly on your back, this brings the packs' center of gravity and your center of gravity as close as possible.

  • For people who carry loads while doing activities that require independent arm movement
  • For anyone skiing, climbing, or hiking rough trails

External frame packs (metal bars on the outside)

  • For people backpacking on established trails or less demanding cross country
  • Proper loading is accomplished more easily
  • More weight can be carried more comfortably while allowing the wearer to walk erect
  • External frames allow for increased ventilation, thereby, allowing you to remain cooler

Tarps

Oware TarpThe tarps that we rent out are O'Ware brand. They are very sturdy 14' x10', 5 ½ lb tarps with guy lines and ten stakes.

These tarps have many uses. They can be used for camping as a rain shelter over a picnic table or the hang out area. They can be used as a lightweight backpacking shelter that sleeps 3-5 persons. There are no poles that come with the tarp, so set-up requires trees, trekking poles, or sticks for the center line. Set up may require extra cord to set up a high tarp.

There are multitudes of set-up options for these tarps, but all take some skill with knots and tarp layout. The most basic set up is the "A-frame," which includes both center line ends tied to trees and the corners and sides tied to trees or the ground (see picture above).
